Unit Rules
All organisations need rules, and our Explorers wrote their own, based on the guidelines in the Scout Law and Promise.
THE SCOUT PROMISE
On my honour, I promise
That I will do my best
To do my duty to God and to The Queen,
To help other people
And to keep the Scout Law.
THE SCOUT LAW
A Scout is to be trusted.
A Scout is loyal.
A Scout is friendly and considerate.
A Scout belongs to the world-wide family of Scouts.
A Scout has courage in all difficulties.
A Scout makes good use of time and is careful of possessions and property.
A Scout has self-respect and respect for others.
The Scout Association has a set of detailed rules for the safe and effective running of Scouting which apply to all in Scouting, and they are called ‘Policy, Organisation and Rules‘.
Our Local Rules, by which we all agree to behave are:
Explorers will always obey the Scout Law, and the laws or the country they are in, and any by-laws or regulations of places they visit.
Each Explorer agrees to the Unit Behaviour Policy. All Explorers who are members of the Unit are deemed to have knowledge of the Behaviour Policy. The Unit Behaviour Policy requires compliance with the Scout Law and Promise at all times.
The Unit Behaviour Policy is as follows.
Trust
Explorers have open communication with the leadership and each other.
Specifically:
• They inform leaders of their personal development objectives, where known;
• They inform leaders of any personal or medical needs; and
• They inform others of any personal issues promptly and appropriately.
Explorers can be relied on when promises are made.
Specifically:
• They complete tasks assigned or ask for help as soon as possible; and
• They do not execute tasks without ensuring they understand them sufficiently.
Explorers demonstrate trust.
Specifically:
• They accept leadership requests in a spirit of trust; and
• They are honest in all dealings with other Explorers or Leaders.
Loyalty
Explorers are loyal to the Unit and to each other.
Specifically:
• They do not single each other out or pick on each other;
• They act as “good ambassadors” for the Unit;
• They stand up for each other; and
• They provide support when needed.
Friendliness
Explorers are friendly to each other and to visitors.
Specifically:
• They welcome visitors;
• They do not resort to name calling or indulge in spiteful behaviour; and
• They welcome new members.
Consideration
Explorers show consideration whilst interacting with others
Specifically
• They allow others to contribute without interruption
• They do not behave in ways that disrupt Unit activities
• They allow others to express opinions
• They ensure any contributions are positive and relevant
• They do not disrupt group discussion
Explorers show consideration in working physically with others
Specifically
• They consider the consequences of their physical actions on others
• They maintain awareness of their surroundings
• They maintain awareness of nearby activity
• They never act physically in a way that may put others at risk
Belonging
Explorers are proud to belong to the Unit and demonstrate this.
Specifically:
• They wear correct and complete uniform when required;
• They participate fully in the ceremonies and routines of the Unit (like flag break and parades);
• They seek out ways to promote the Unit and Scouting; and
• They seek out ways to join in with other Scouting events.
Respect
Explorers show respect for Leadership.
Specifically:
• They pay silent attention when addressed formally in ceremonies including flag break / flag down;
• They use appropriate body language in group meetings; and
• They use clear and appropriate language when discussing things with leaders.
• They respect the rank and not the man.
Explorers show respect for each other.
Specifically:
• They listen to each other carefully;
• They do not demand submission from others (“street respect”)
• They do not spread rumours or lies about each other; and
• They use clear and appropriate language when discussing things together.
• They observe the requirements of others for physical personal space
Explorers show respect for other people.
Specifically:
• Nicknames will not be used where there are ambiguities as to the meaning or where the intention is to cause upset to others. ;
• The Unit is respectful or race, gender, gender orientation, religious affiliation; physical or mental status;
• They listen to and include visitors; and
• They do not spread rumours or lies about others.
Care of Time
Explorers are careful of time.
Specifically:
• They attend in good time to allow events to start;
• They perform duties or tasks promptly and without argument
• They are prepared to help at the end of events;
• They are clear as to any other facts that affect their attendance; and
• They give reasonable notice of changes that are required.
• They ensure contributions to group discussions are relevant and not wasteful of time.
Care of Property
Explorers are careful of Unit, group or other property.
Specifically:
• They never take items without proper (written) permission;
• They always return kit promptly and in as good or better condition than they received it;
• They watch out for things that might cause damage to equipment and either point it out or act to prevent it; and
• They do not damage or, by omission of action, allow damage to occur to places, sites, buildings or kit.
Explorers are careful of each other’s property.Specifically:
• They never borrow the property of others without asking and receiving confirmation; and
• They always return things they share with each other promptly and in good condition.
Explorers use property correctly and safely.
Specifically:
• They undertake to learn how to use equipment correctly and safely before using it; and
• They do not use personal or unit kit inappropriately or dangerously (e.g. using phones or music players when in ceremonies or on adventurous activities requiring focussed attention. ).
Self Respect
Explorers have self respect.
Specifically:
• They set themselves reasonable, but challenging, goals for self development;
• They participate freely and cheerfully;
• They are dignified in victory and defeat;
• They do not require others to validate their egos; and
• They do not show off, or demand undue attention from others for the purposes of self-promotion.
Explorers demonstrate self respect.
Specifically
• They take personal care of their appearance;
• They take personal care of their health and their own bodies;
• They do not smoke, or experiment with drugs, or become intoxicated; and
• They set their own personal and physical boundaries in relationships in a mature and safe fashion.
Respect for others
Explorers have respect for others.
Specifically:
• They never support, permit or encourage bullying or abusive behaviour;
• They step in to prevent harm from foolish, dangerous or abusive behaviour;
• They discuss calmly any behavioural issues that reduce the ability of the Unit to do things others want to;
• They point out behaviour or circumstances that are dangerous or which reduce the ability of the Unit to work as a team; and
• They put the Unit goals above their own personal demands when required.
Explorers demonstrate respect for others.
Specifically:
• There is absolutely no physical or emotional violence;
• They help others to achieve their goals;
• They only engage in appropriate personal relationships;
• Their personal relationships do not interfere with the good conduct of the Unit; and
• Their personal relationships do not interfere with the ability of others to enjoy the opportunities presented by the Unit, either during those relationships or after they end.
They take care of health and physical safety of others.
Specifically:
• They do not encourage others to smoke, or experiment with drugs, or become intoxicated;
• They encourage others to stay physically safe in relationships; and
• They maintain a good standard of first aid knowledge.
Courage
Explorers have courage in all difficulties.
Specifically:
• They strive to complete things once started, but
• They have the courage to stop if circumstances dictate it;
• They defend the defenceless
• They stand by their convictions and beliefs but
• They have the courage to change their opinion in the light of new information
• They behave in an honest and forthright manner
• They resist peer pressure to break the Scout law
• They have the courage to participate
