Another successful year at Gilwell 24, shared with Brocks Unit and the Bedfordshire Jamboree Contingent The Usual 200++ activities were laid on, little or no sleep was had by all, and – in between the rain showers – much fun. We sent a leader to the Bushcraft Zone [read on...]
Event Reports
Detailed reports on what we have done, where and when
The two teams (less Suzi) completed a 17.5km practice hike under “exam conditions” with no adults in teams. Over Sharpenhoe Clappers, then up through Harlington to Ampthill, via all the hills and mud we could find.
Both teams finished over 1 hour ahead of “schedule”, with excellent pace, teamwork and navigation.
We thought they could do it, and they most certainly did
The Unit practice event went well with 10 people pushing themselves over 24km with the usual mixture of motivation, advice and jokes from David Mark and Sweyn
The trace of the route is here in three parts (technology issues abounded)

(but not the weird GPS error that put us in the lake)
AND
At those speeds, both Unit teams are in with a good chance of a top 10 place (with a predicted finish around 7h30min assuming 10% route errors and 3 stops of 10 minutes each. Let us all hope that life actually works out like that, as the Southern 50 has a habit of springing surprises by way of route, weather and terrain!
a “back to basics” wood fired camp
coracles, small boats, slides, card games, backwoods hobo-stoves, ball games, tents, music around the fire at night, swimming at Aqua splash.

Matt has a view on the thing that went wrong, and it is here:
Also, a short list of minor injuries that mean that David will not play with curved knives, Sweyn will wear gloves to split bamboo, and Harry will positively – definitely – never ever kick a brick into a wasps nest ever again

Training for Southern 50Nothing in life is free, and completing 30km and 50km (and eventually 80km) walks requires a deal of dedicated training, teamwork and sheer physical graft to get ready for.
