It is not all Scouting practicals or lectures at Explorers. Sometimes we just ‘chill’ I also learned a new word “Buff Ting”, which Sweyn promises to explain to me one day. Apparently Sam already knows what it means. [Anomalous Unit Explorers - Card School 2] This is the Anomalous Card [read on...]
We all went to Twickenham to invest new Explorers and watch the St Georges Day Rugby

Great match, great day out, and one in which the meaning of being a member of an organisation with close to 500,000 members in the UK was driven home by the huge line of flags!
Cooking at Camp can be difficult.
Things are not always clean, food may be stored in ways that are not perfectly cold or clean, and getting the Explorers to wash up can be a real nightmare. Hot, thundery weather can help bread go mouldy in one day at camp.
However, an outbreak of E. Coli or Campylobacter at camp can be devastating to all concerned and is a real risk.
So, why don’t more Explorers get sick? The answer is excellent training!
Rita at District has arranged for a Food Hygiene Course to be delivered on Sunday 5th September 2010 at Lesley Sell Activity Centre, Bromham. Please can you advertise this course to all adults in the County. To book a place please contact me and I will contact the County Office.
This course is industry recognized and can be used ‘outside of Scouting’. It is a good way of asking Wood Badge holders to continuing their personal development or just to give the ‘camp cook’ some good food hygiene knowledge. The course is moderated by the Chartered Institute of Environmental Health and is the Level 2 Award in Food Safety in Catering. This is a 6 hour course (09:30 – 16:30) covering the topics listed below.
- The law
- Food Safety Hazards
- Temperature Control
- Food Handlers
- Principals of safe food storage
- Cleaning
- Food Premises and equipment
- At the end of the course the candidates will complete a multiple choice exam. There are 30 questions to be answered. If the candidates get 20 questions correct they will receive a certificate which is valid for 3 years.
- As this course is not a ‘standard’ Scouting modular course, there will be a fee of £35 per candidate, payable upon booking. This covers the course fees, examination and certificate.
- Guides, friends, work colleagues are welcome to attend the course, to book a place, please contact our County Training Administrator, Rita. (I can pass that on – contact me via the Contact Form on this site or by email to me)
St Georges Day at Twickenham – a massive event, up to 70,000 people and a Bath v Wasps match. We are hoping to invest the new members on the Turf! Start your count down now to the St George’s Day match when Bath Rugby face London Wasps at Twickenham on Saturday 24th April, kick off 5.30pm. The rivalry between these two clubs has always been fierce, but now it is taken to a whole new level as they prepare to meet at the home of English rugby on Saturday 24th April. If you thought St George slaying the dragon was a big deal – you ain’t seen nothing yet! The game will raise money for Help for Heroes, an organisation that supports service personnel injured in combat. This is a charity which has seen a great link forged with sport and particularly rugby and Bath are delighted that their own sporting heroes can, along with their supporters, contribute to such a fantastic and valuable cause.
We have teams entered for the Ultimate Tanners summer walking marathon at 30km distances. After 50 years of inspiration, dedication and personal commitment, the Tanners Marathon will end on a high note. You have up to 2010 to enjoy and register your part in what will then become a legend. Get your certificates, contribute to a team and possibly a trophy. BUT, if you ever intended, or wish to do it again, now is the time. The more the merrier over these last years. Bring you children and hope that they will in their turn develop similar experiences for the generations to come. These things do not just happen; special people make them happen. The Committee have decided not to do a 50 mile course this year, but are instead putting all their energy into making the 30, 20, and 10 mile events as memorable as ever.
